I\u2019ll be upfront and say Gerber has made some knives and tools I really like, and also some that I really don\u2019t.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even so, I\u2019m not here to jump on the Gerber-bashing bandwagon. This is a company that a lot of self-appointed experts like to drag through the mud, and not without reason. They\u2019ve made some questionable products (the utterly ridiculous Gerber Gator machete\/saw hybrid springs to mind) but also some truly excellent knives. And lord knows I don\u2019t love multi-tools, but when I do reach for one, it\u2019s usually a Gerber.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With that in mind, I picked up a Gerber Versafix fixed blade\/machete hybrid with the intention of reviewing it with no preconceived notions. And you know what? class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gerber Versafix: First Impressions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea behind the Gerber Versafix is to provide the advantages of both a <strong>camp knife and a machete in one package<\/strong>. At a glance, I\u2019d say they\u2019ve succeeded. <strong>Bigger than your average <a href=\"https:\/\/techwriteredc.com\/bps-knives-adventurer-bushcraft-knife-review\/\">bushcraft knife<\/a> and smaller than your average machete,<\/strong> the Versafix threads that needle nicely.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has a<strong> very grippy handle<\/strong> that feels <strong>comfortable in hand,<\/strong> and comes packaged with a pretty <strong>standard-issue Nylon sheath. <\/strong>I\u2019ve been reviewing quite a few <a href=\"https:\/\/techwriteredc.com\/weyland-kukri-machete-review\/\">machetes and kukris<\/a> recently, and one of the things that most surprises me about the Versafix is how<strong> lightweight<\/strong> it is, even when compared to similar-sized blades in the \u201cmini-machete\u201d arena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The<strong> cutting edge is decently sharp <\/strong>out of the box, but not quite as sharp as I\u2019d like it to be. The Gerber Versafix measures <strong>14.3 inches <\/strong>in total length, and has a <strong>9-inch blade <\/strong>(the actual cutting edge is <strong>8.625&#8243;<\/strong>). It has a <strong>kukri-like recurve<\/strong> to it (though I wouldn\u2019t call this a true kukri blade by any stretch of the imagination). Gerber doesn\u2019t say, and we can assume that if it was an impressive grade of steel, they\u2019d advertise it as such. I\u2019ve seen other reviewers state the steel to be either<strong> 2Cr13 or 3Cr13,<\/strong> which makes sense, but I don\u2019t know where that information comes from or whether it\u2019s accurate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Either way, it\u2019s stainless steel and clearly<strong> has good corrosion resistance, as well as toughness <\/strong>(i.e. resistance to breaking under stress or impact). Based on my own experience, it takes an edge nicely, but also<strong> dulls fairly quickly.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That being the case, I find either <strong>2Cr13 or 3Cr13<\/strong> steel to be believable. I don\u2019t know if it&#8217;s true <strong>rubber or a rubber-like plastic<\/strong> (probably the latter), but it locks onto my palm beautifully, and is <strong>super comfortable with no hot spots. <\/strong>The grip is nicely textured, including some<strong> jimping-like ridges <\/strong>where one\u2019s thumb and index finger rest on the handle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sheath is perfectly adequate, but nothing to write home about. It\u2019s your<strong> basic ballistic Nylon deal, with velcro flaps<\/strong> to hold the knife in place. It\u2019s snug and secure on the blade. Can it, as advertised, chop like a machete, cut like a knife, and split like an axe?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, it strikes a <strong>very good balance. <\/strong>The Versafix <strong>handles batoning quite well,<\/strong> though if you\u2019re working with harder woods, the max diameter you\u2019ll want to attempt it on is probably 3<strong> or 4 inches. <\/strong>With softer stuff like seasoned pine firewood you can split bigger pieces. I don\u2019t know if the jimping on the spine really helps with batoning in any meaningful way, but <strong>the blade does a good job.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a mean little chopper too. It wouldn\u2019t be my first choice for taking down a full-sized tree, but I used mine to break down my old Christmas tree from last season, and the weight-forward chopping end of the blade made good, deep cuts every time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For finer, detail-oriented tasks like slicing up materials and shaving tinder, the inner recurve section of the blade works nicely. I\u2019m not trying to provoke an existential crisis, but ask yourself: are you the type who likes to have the exact right tool for each job? Or would you rather have a jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none blade that can do a pretty good job at a wide range of tasks?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re the latter, then the Gerber Versafix might be for you. I will say that it\u2019s a <strong>fairly light-duty version of a knife\/machete hybrid. <\/strong>There are other blades in this in-between space that are a little more rough-and-tumble, and can handle chopping and splitting larger and tougher pieces of wood. But at the regular price\u2014usually around <strong>$45<\/strong>\u2014I\u2019m less convinced that the Versafix is a bargain.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are simply better options in the over-$40 price range.
