But the EF121 has a much more <strong>squat shape<\/strong>, as well as a handle that, despite being a bit short, also feels more <strong>comfortable<\/strong> and fills my palm nicely.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re looking for more information on Eafengrow as a company, I don\u2019t have a lot to offer. The actual cutting edge is a little less, right around 3 inches even. It\u2019s a rather broad blade as well, <strong>1.25 inches<\/strong> at its widest point and <strong>3.5 mm thick.<\/strong> Given these dimensions and the EF121\u2019s weight of<strong> 8 ounces,<\/strong> this is quite a squat, chunky little knife for its size.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Blade Shape &amp; Grind<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3EvFmkZ\" target=\"_blank\">Eafengrow EF121<\/a> has a <strong>false grind,<\/strong> essentially a <strong>saber grind<\/strong> with the appearance of a <strong>\u201cfalse\u201d edge <\/strong>toward the front of the spine. For all intents and purposes, it functions as a sabre grind. The false edge is mostly just a cosmetic choice, though there\u2019s an argument to be made that it allows the blade to penetrate more easily.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m generally not a fan of false grinds because, in practice, I find that they do little other than make the blade weaker. In this case, it doesn\u2019t seem to be a real issue, as the EF121 has a very <strong>thick and sturdy blade,<\/strong> which (I can say after some pretty heavy-duty punishment) doesn\u2019t seem likely to break. It\u2019s tool steel, kind of intermediate between carbon and stainless, with about<strong> 1.5% carbon, 12% chromium<\/strong> (just shy of the amount needed for true stainless) and somewhere near <strong>1% each of molybdenum and vanadium.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You wouldn\u2019t be wrong to wonder if this blade is really D2. A lot of cheap knock-off knives turn out to be made of something else entirely; or if they are real D2, they have lousy heat treatment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I can\u2019t say for sure, though after using this knife for a while, I\u2019ll offer that it feels and performs like D2. I\u2019ve heard that some of Eafengrow\u2019s early knives were marred by having the wrong steel, but that these issues have largely been straightened out, and these days they seem to be pretty good at actually using the types of steel they say they do.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyway, the Eafengrow EF121 comes very sharp right out of the box, and D2 offers pretty <strong>good edge retention.<\/strong> It\u2019s not the easiest steel to sharpen, but with a little know-how and a good sharpening stone you can put a great edge back on it when the time comes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not as tough as some steels, which makes it a bit vulnerable to chipping, similar to carbon steel. But it offers hardness comparable to stainless, and is only <strong>slightly less corrosion-resistant <\/strong>than true stainless steel. It\u2019s a good choice for knives that are used outdoors a lot, because <strong>G10 is tough, lightweight, waterproof, <\/strong>and can be washed with most ordinary cleaning products. This particular model has some<strong> fine, grain-like texture<\/strong> to it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For what is essentially a cheap knife, I\u2019m genuinely impressed with the design of the handle. The scales are perfectly flush with the tang all around the edges, and despite being compact, it\u2019s really the <strong>perfect size and shape for average hands. <\/strong>This is a knife that\u2019s made to be choked up on, with thumb jimping on the spine of the blade, a nicely-sized finger groove for one\u2019s index finger, and even slight indentations in the scales where one\u2019s middle and ring fingers can dig in, making it a really excellent grip. It\u2019s a pretty <strong>basic black Kydex<\/strong> sheath, essentially a big chunk of <strong>plastic with a belt clip. <\/strong>It\u2019s almost identical to the sheath that comes with the EF107, so I assume these are pretty standard-issue for Eafengrow <a href=\"https:\/\/techwriteredc.com\/best-fixed-blade-edc-knives\/\">fixed blade knives<\/a>. It\u2019s <strong>clunky, bulky, <\/strong>and if anything holds the knife a little too securely for easy removal.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I know a lot of people like this style of sheath, so if you\u2019re a fan in general, you\u2019ll probably have no issue with this one. I don\u2019t have anything against Chinese knives in general, but any time I buy one from an unknown brand that looks like a knockoff of some other knife, I\u2019m ready to tear it to pieces. Not so with this one.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, who\u2019s it for? Or maybe a better question: what\u2019s it for?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is kind of a<strong> jack-of-all-trades fixed blade. <\/strong>You could EDC it, and the compact size certainly makes it fairly easy to carry on one\u2019s belt. It\u2019s <strong>a little weighty <\/strong>for its size, but not truly heavy. The EF121\u2019s overall feel is somewhere between a tactical blade and a <a href=\"https:\/\/techwriteredc.com\/the-best-swiss-army-knife-for-camping\/\">camping knife<\/a>.<strong> <\/strong>I could easily see this going on someone\u2019s bug out bag, but it\u2019s also <strong>good for all your average camp chores.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I tested mine by cutting ropes, paracord and a bunch of other stuff, as well as some bushcraft tasks like feather sticking, whittling and notching, all of which it handles very well and remains sharp. I even batoned some small sections of wood with it, though the shortness of the blade definitely limits the size of wood one can split.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A lot of low-budget knives tend to be modeled after better-established, more expensive knives. And while I can\u2019t say for sure if the Eafengrow is intentionally derivative of something else, it certainly reminds me a lot of a non-skeletonized <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3sISVuJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Esee Izula<\/a><\/strong>. I suppose if you want an Izula but don\u2019t want to spend Izula money, the Eafengrow is a pretty good
