It\u2019s the season of planting, weeding, pruning and trimming, and a hori-hori knife\u2014a <strong>Japanese-inspired tool<\/strong> whose name literally means <strong>\u201cdig, dig\u201d<\/strong>\u2014is the perfect implement to get you through this season of yard work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today I\u2019m taking a close look at the Black Iron Hori Hori, and I\u2019ve had ample opportunity to put it to the test this spring. The handle feels a bit squared-off in my palm, so at first brush, it\u2019s not quite as comfortable as the <a href=\"https:\/\/techwriteredc.com\/barebones-hori-hori-review\/\">Barebones Hori Hori, which I reviewed last fall<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I will say that the Black Iron is quite a bit sharper than the Barebones was right out of the box. A sharpening stone is included as well. It\u2019s<strong> ideal for digging,<\/strong> and the sharpened edges allow it to be driven with ease into hard and compacted soil. The thickness of the blade and the sturdiness of the full tang allow the user to do so without concern that the Hori Hori will bend or break.<strong> It feels rock-solid.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The edges are also useful for<strong> cutting roots, vines, twine, string<\/strong> and any other material that might need some slicing during the course of your landscaping adventures. The serrated side in particular has formidable teeth that give it some serious cutting power.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/techwriteredc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/black-iron-hori-hori-blade.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13794\" srcset=\"https:\/\/techwriteredc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/black-iron-hori-hori-blade.jpg 800w, https:\/\/techwriteredc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/black-iron-hori-hori-blade-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/techwriteredc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/black-iron-hori-hori-blade-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/techwriteredc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/black-iron-hori-hori-blade-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/techwriteredc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/black-iron-hori-hori-blade-500x375.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Depth markings are molded into the metal of the blade, with inch markings up to <strong>6\u201d as well as millimeter markings up to 150mm.<\/strong> The markings are super helpful for planting bulbs or seeds at a specific depth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The blade steel\u2014which, again, I don\u2019t know the precise composition of\u2014is clearly very <strong>corrosion-resistant.<\/strong> I left my Hori Hori out in my garden for several rainy days, and there isn\u2019t so much as a fleck of rust on it. For the record, I did that on purpose (you know, for science) and definitely didn\u2019t just forget it out there.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>wooden handle<\/strong> isn\u2019t especially grippy, and it can slip under damp conditions. It helps that it flares out toward the blade, which helps keep it in your palm, but overall I\u2019d recommend wearing garden gloves for protection. Gloves will give you some extra grip, and also help keep your fingers safe in the event of a slip. It holds the Hori Hori snugly in place, and has a little strap with a snap on it that wraps around the handle. My only concern with it is that the serrated edge of the Hori Hori will gradually tear up the inside of the sheath.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sharpening stone is, if not totally useless, then pretty close. It\u2019s small <strong>(about 1\u201d x 3\u201d)<\/strong> and quite coarse. It works decently enough for sharpening the Hori Hori to a serviceable edge, but don\u2019t use it on your good knives. If you have a better sharpening stone, I\u2019d stick with it. I can\u2019t hold a knife that\u2019s meant to be used as a shovel to the same standard as a high-end EDC knife.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I say that because some of the drawbacks of the Black Iron Hori Hori (i.e. not knowing what type of steel it\u2019s made with) aren\u2019t as big a deal here as they would be with a different type of blade. It lacks some of the Barebones\u2019 style and flair, but it\u2019s an <strong>affordable <\/strong>workhorse that handles garden chores with ease.
