I am usually very careful with my gear, but on a recent camping trip I forgot to pack my first ESEE 3 back up when breaking down camp. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was the first time I ever left a knife behind, and I was mad at myself. But instead of just shrugging it off, I went and bought another. With a <strong>3.3 inch cutting edge and an overall length of 8.3 inches, <\/strong>it falls into the sweet spot of compact survival and utility knives. It is made from <strong>1095 high carbon steel<\/strong> with a durable coating that helps resist rust and makes it feel tactical without being flashy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The blade comes with a full flat grind, making it a razor sharp slicer right out of the box. At only <strong>5.2 ounces<\/strong> without the sheath, it carries light while still feeling stout enough to take real work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a knife that can go from cutting rope and cordage to making feather sticks or notching tent stakes without skipping a beat. The <strong>contoured micarta handles <\/strong>are smooth but grippy, with just enough swell to fill out the hand without being bulky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The finger choil is excellent for choking up on the blade and doing controlled, detailed cuts. That choil, combined with aggressive jimping on the spine, really locks your grip in when you need precision. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The jimping can be a little too sharp if you are working bare handed for long stretches, but gloves fix that issue fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Compared to other knives in the same size range, the handle length is a big advantage. It is just long enough to give a solid four-finger grip, even for larger hands. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have ever used an <em>Ontario RAT 3<\/em>, you know the handle feels short. It has a satisfying click when the knife locks in, zero rattle, and a solid thumb ramp for easy deployment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It rides fairly high on the belt with the stock clip, which some people dislike, but you can easily rig it for horizontal carry, drop leg, or MOLLE mounting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am not a huge fan of bulky sheaths, but the ESEE system is versatile and practical. It makes sense whether you are attaching it to a pack, a plate carrier, or just running it on your belt around camp. The thin spine and flat grind give it real bite in wood and man-made materials. <strong>Feather sticking, carving, slicing rope, or making trap triggers<\/strong> all feel natural with this knife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also like using it for chest lever cuts, where the thin stock just chews through wood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Out on camping trips, the ESEE 3 has become a blade I trust for all the light and medium camp chores. Around the house, I have even used it for yard work like <strong>trimming small limbs and cutting brush.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It might sound crazy to some, but I believe in using my gear. There is no sense owning a knife like this and letting it sit idle. Break it, bend it, abuse it, even if you are the fifth or tenth owner, they will replace it. That unconditional guarantee adds serious confidence when you are out in the woods or just carrying it day to day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At around <strong>$120 to $130<\/strong> depending on options, the ESEE 3 is not the cheapest fixed blade. You can pick up an Ontario RAT 3 for about half the price, but it will not give you the same handle comfort, fit, finish, or warranty. Absolutely. This knife is not about flash or gimmicks. It is about <strong>reliability, comfort, and performance<\/strong> in a size that makes sense for real world use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is light enough for backpacking, tough enough for camp chores, and compact enough to carry every day. I liked it enough to buy it twice.
