The answer is a definite yes and here is why!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently I was asked a question: is it better to carry a multitool, or a separate knife and a set of pliers for EDC?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The question stuck in my brain more than I expected. While there\u2019s an undeniable convenience to having multiple tools in one compact package, I\u2019ve always felt that it\u2019s better to carry several tools that each do one job well, as opposed to one tool that does many jobs poorly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have been carrying a set of real pliers in my daily EDC for years. Either a 5\u2033 Knipex or a small set of Channellocks. I recently did a in-depth&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/techwriteredc.com\/knipex-5-cobra-pliers-review\/\">review of the Knipex Cobra 5\u2033 here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ll tell you upfront that I\u2019m biased in this regard. I\u2019m a big pliers guy, and I\u2019ve found countless uses for my EDC pliers. Along with a good <a href=\"https:\/\/techwriteredc.com\/knife-steel-guide-a-compresinve-guide-for-blade-steel-on-edc-knives-and-fixed-blades\/\">knife blade<\/a> and flashlight, they\u2019re one of my most-used tools. These days, our stores and pockets are overloaded with a multitude of multitools in every conceivable size, shape and configuration. You can get a multitool that <a href=\"https:\/\/techwriteredc.com\/why-you-should-always-include-a-flashlight-in-your-everyday-carry\/\">includes a flashlight<\/a>. You can get one that fits in your wallet. You can get one that floats. You can get one that\u2019s also a belt buckle. (That\u2019s a real thing. I\u2019m not making that up.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, as multitools become increasingly\u2026.let\u2019s say, \u201ccreative,\u201d they\u2019re becoming less and less functional. Those issues are:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>They\u2019re almost always long-nosed pliers, which don\u2019t grip especially well.&nbsp;<\/li><li>They\u2019re often made of soft steel, which causes the teeth on the plier jaws to round down when gripping something harder than themselves.<\/li><li>They don\u2019t open wide enough to grasp large objects.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Their handles usually have harsh metal edges, making them painful to grip with the force necessary to actually turn a nut or bolt.&nbsp;<\/li><li>They require two hands to open.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If any pair of \u201creal\u201d pliers had those shortcomings, you\u2019d throw them away and get a better pair of pliers. But many of us are willing to accept the limitations of a multitool because they are, undeniably, convenient.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A pair of quality EDC pliers beats a multitool every time.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Even so, I would make the case that a pair of quality EDC pliers beats a multitool every time. They weigh just 0.81 oz. and measure a mere 5 inches long, making them eminently pocketable and great for everyday carry. The Knipex pliers have self-locking, offset jaws and an easy-to-use, push-button adjustment that can be used one-handed. They\u2019re made of hardened steel, can grip just about any shaped object, open up to 1.75\u201d wide, and have a pinch guard to keep your fingers safe. Victorinox makes some classic <a href=\"https:\/\/techwriteredc.com\/the-history-of-the-swiss-army-knife\/\">Swiss Army<\/a> knives that offer all the advantages of a multitool with none of the drawbacks or complications.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ll say one last thing here, which is that I\u2019m not anti-multitool. I totally get that they\u2019re convenient, and there\u2019s no reason not to toss one in your glove box or hiking pack just in case you one day need it. I simply believe that it\u2019s best to have the right tool for the right job whenever possible.
